Bastar - Part 9 - Mendri Ghumar : Valley of Fog

This place is surrounded by scenic valley and is also known as “Valley of Fog”. First look, the place looks like a horseshoe shaped canyon surrounded by lush green valley. Hence we can even call it “Grand Canyon of Bastar”. The valley is too scenic, and the sheer beauty of this valley cannot be captured in photographs. It just needs to be experienced in person.

We were told that during rainy season, you will find waterfall falling into the gorge from 125-150 feet height. And this water finally makes its way to the mighty Chitrakoot falls.

As the sun was setting slowly, the valley was looking even more majestic. We then headed to our campsite which was closer to this point. Couldn’t believe that we would be camping at such an alluring scenic location.

The team of Unexplored Bastar had really done a great job with arrangements – with special toilets for men and women, blankets and mattresses kept in each tent, traditional delicious dinner was arranged by Tribal people with lights and music. Bon fire was made ready by the time we reached our tents.

We kept our bags in our tents and then we were taken for a walk along the valley in dark. We had to switch on our torch lights and mobile flashlights since it was pitch dark. Unexplored Bastar team was leading us. They took us to few corner points of each valley and made us sit at each spot for some time in silence to absorb the serenity of the place. While we were meditating, we could hear some music at a far-off distance looks like from some tribal village partying for new years eve 😊.

Finally, after an hour of walk around the valley we came back to our tents. By this time, tribal folks had made a dining area for us at our camp site. The entire family served us each portion of the meal one by one. We were just awe stuck by the hospitality we received at Bastar.

After a wholesome dinner, we sat around for some time around the bon fire to chit chat. It also started getting cold. So, time to get our warmers out. Then we were briefed on next day’s plan (most awaited day) – Chitrakoot falls. We were asked to wake up at 5:30 am. So, after some time, we bid good bye to everyone and got into our tents for a good night's sleep. Camping on top of a valley was a first-time experience for me and indeed most memorable. Thanks to Unexplored Bastar team for giving us this experience.

When we woke up in the morning, we could see thick fog engulf the valley completely. That’s when we realized the reason behind this valley being called “Valley of Fog”.

It was an absolute delight to watch sunset and sunrise from this valley. After clicking few pictures and freshening up, we started our journey towards the last spot of our trip and the most happening destination – Chitrakoot Falls which is also called as “Niagara Of India”. You will understand the reason behind this in my next blog. So signing off now from the Valley Of Fog😊.
