Aga Khan Palace

My Pune Travel Diary

Day 3 – 7th August 2022

Last day of my stint in Pune. I had a late evening flight to Bangalore. My driver had recommended to visit Aga Khan Palace on the last day since it is on the way to the airport.

So I was picked up from my guest house at around 10:30 am. We reached Aga Khan palace at around 11:30 Am. There is ample parking space here to park your vehicle.

Entry fee – There was no entry fee here as well on account of India’s Independence. Usually they charge around Rs 25 for us and Rs 300 for Foreigners.

Timings -  9 am to 5:30 PM

Some facts – This palace was built by Sultan Mohammed Shah Aga Khan with an aim to provide employment to the people affected by Famine. It is closely linked to the Indian freedom movement as it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu. And in this place Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai passed away. This place is also known as Gandhi National Memorial. In 2003, Archeological Survey of India( ASI) declared the site as a monument of national importance.

Aga Khan Palace is known for its architectural excellence. Spreading across 19 acre land, the picturesque beauty of the palace captivates the eye of every onlooker with its magnificent structure.

This museum comprises of 5 rooms and every room has been planned really well here where in you will see photos depicting glimpses from the life of Mahatma Gandhi and other personalities of the Indian Freedom Struggle.

The museum tour has been planned really well with clear directions.

We next started walking towards the samadhi of Kasturba Gandhi.

Enroute we saw Khadi Shop which deals in Khadi and other hand loomed textiles.

This place also mesmerizes its visitors with beautiful spacious lawns. Hence I took a tour of this place from the outskirts and was amazed with the rich colorful flora around.

Rest Room Facilities : There are good rest room facilities inside the premises.

Once can easily spend an hour or two if you are a history lover. Good place to relax and unwind after the tour.

Next, I set off to airport to board my flight to Bangalore with a satisfaction of a trip well planned. And I hope my Pune Travel Diary will help people with insights around what are the prominent landmarks that needs to be visited when in Pune.

Signing off from Pune by savoring pav bhaji at the airport one last time ðŸ˜Š
