Kaziranga - Welcome to the Home of Indian one-horned Rhinoceros

Kaziranga is a national park located in the state of Assam, India. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most sought after wildlife tourist destination in India famous for its Indian one-horned rhinoceros.

I had signed up for this trip with f5Escapes which is an Experiential travel company focussing on redefining the way Women travel in India. We had booked our flights to and from Jorhat airport since this airport is closer to Kaziranga. It was a full day journey from Bangalore(Bangalore to Kolkata and Kolkata to Jorhat) and we reached Jorhat airport at 2 PM.

We were hungry by now. So we were taken directly to Gulmohar Grand restaurant in Jorhat for lunch. We had preordered our lunch from airport itself. So our food was ready by the time we reached. Food was good. After a sumptuous meal, we then started our journey to our place of stay.

We were put up at Nature Hunt Eco Camp, Kaziranga. By the time we reached our place of stay it was 4:30 PM and sun had set in. So we decided to rest for today and explore Kaziranga tomorrow. We ordered Assamese thali for dinner which was lip smacking. The staff at the restaurant explained us in detail every item they had served in thali.

Next day we woke up to the chirping of birds as early as 5 am in the morning. Then we decided to take a stroll around the property and clicked some pictures too.

Breakfast was ready by 7:30 am. Post breakfast, we set off on our Kaziranga sightseeing.

Kakochang Water falls

The waterfall base is around 12 to 14 kilometers from Bokakhat and trek of around 4 km from the parking will take you to the waterfall. But this is a very easy trek and you wouldn’t realize the distance you have covered by walking in nature’s lap. You will come across lot of Bamboo trees, river streams and few half constructed bridges which you will have to cross along the trek.  Last 10 minutes of the trek uphill are clearly carved out steps upto the waterfall.

If you are planning a dip in the waterfall, please note that there are no changing rooms here.

Post the trek we were hungry by now, so we headed straight to our lunch place. We requested our driver to take us to a place where we can savor authentic Assamese cuisine. So he dropped us to Baankahi restaurant. We ordered fish thali here and it was good.

Kaziranga Safari

Our Safari Jeep had arrived at the restaurant itself to pick us up for our 2 PM safari timeslot allotted to us.  So post lunch we hopped onto our jeep and reached the Western range of the forest entry gate.

From here began our journey into the world of Rhinos. It was really nice to see these one horned Rhinos enjoying their time in their natural habitat. Apart from the iconic one-horned rhinoceros, the park is the breeding ground of elephants, wild water buffalo, and deers too. We spotted some exotic birds as well but I don’t recall the names of any of those.

After around 2 hours of our Safari journey, we bid adieu to these Rhinos and headed to other side of the forest where our driver dropped us back to the parking area.

By now we were tired and sun had set in already. So we rushed to our place of stay for a much needed relaxation. And then at around 6:30 PM headed to Orchid park to witness local cultural performances.

Entry ticket per person – Rs 400

After buying tickets, we headed straight to the cultural center where the performances were lined up. We were amazed to witness the various flavors of Assam through the dance forms that were being shown. I have uploaded a short video here for a glimpse.

The show duration was planned for 2 hours. So we returned back to our stay by 8:30, had dinner and called off for the day since we had to get up early next day to embark on yet another interesting sojourn – Majuli which is the largest river island in the world. More details about my stint in Majuli in my next blog😊.
