Established in the year of 1979 by the Indian railways, Mysuru Rail Museum is a museum that lets you immerse in the world of Indian railways.
This museum is located very close to Mysuru railway station. Hence in case you arrive early to board train or if there are any delays in your train arrival would suggest to explore this museum which is totally worth it.
When we reached there was no queue at the entry so we took entry tickets quickly and started our exploration.
Entry Fee – Rs 50
Timings – 10 am to 5:30 pm
Security was kind enough to tell us to leave our bags, backpacks at the security helpdesk because they knew this would take time to explore and with bags it will be tiresome.
We started our exploration now by entering the first gallery which depicted the story of evolution of Indian railways, different signaling systems and many more.
There is also a multimedia file which is being played here on a LED tv which shows us the different actors involved in the ecosystem of railways and their relentless efforts in making our rail journey smooth sailing.
Different types of gauges also were placed on the ground – metre gauge, narrow gauge etc. Museum is very clean, well maintained with clearly defined pathways.
After we came out of this gallery, we then saw few vintage locomotives placed on the outdoor premises of the museum. One can hop onto these and click pictures.
We next entered Hoysala house which is a gallery depicting the evolution of locomotives.
There is a mock railway station set up with the signaling system, platform, model of a coolie and a toy train too. No extra ticket for this ride. You can show your museum entry ticket and hop onto this train. Visitors can hop onto the train and enjoy this jolly ride around the museum along with a green tunnel experience.. During the ride, you will also get to see a vintage yellow railway car too.
There is a small café and a souvenir shop too.
This in fact is a great way to put in an hour at this museum after spending the day at Zoo/Palace and familiarize youngsters with Indian railways who have played a huge part in connecting this country.
