Short Wave Radio Museum - Relive the Radio Days

If you are passionate about Radios then this place is a must visit in Bangalore. Short Wave Radio Museum is the brain child of Mr. Uday Kalburgi and is nestled in the quaint locality of Basaveshwaranagar, Bangalore.

He is Mr Uday Kalburgi and this is his world of radios

He has a collection of around 150+ radios from all over the world from 1920 to 1977. We were amazed to see his collection and there is a story behind every radio here. You must visit to hear these interesting stories๐Ÿ˜Š.

He has even maintained the receipts of radios which were brought way back in 1963.

As you glance through each rack in this museum, you will find all kind of Vintage radios. And I am sure you must have seen at least one of them during your childhood days (especially the PHILIPS one). I could recognize one ๐Ÿ˜Š

Most of the radios are encased in large wooden cabinets brought from Holland, USA, Australia and are restored here with original components.

On the walls you will find posters of old Radio brands – PHILIPS, MURPHY, Pilot etc.

When asked how did he manage to collect all these antique radios? He had a simple answer – Sunday market, Scrap dealers and few people gift him too seeing his passion for radios. But please note that he doesn’t repair radios. He only restores them to original state.

There is a nice workshop set up in the same museum. He told us that he also conducts sessions for interested school and college students. In fact he has some mini projects to give them too if interested in electronics.

Elements that help in Radio making

He gets all kinds of visitors right from students, travel bloggers like us, senior citizens ( age group of 60 to 90 who have lived through the radio days) and even foreigners. He told us the story of a German visitor who wanted to visit this museum and then catch his flight to Germany. He was so engrossed in the collection here that he didn’t realize it was time to leave for airport. Kalburgi sir’s family hosted an authentic North Karnataka meal and then bid adieu to him. He was overwhelmed seeing the unique radio sets and the hospitality he received here.

This museum was inaugurated on World Radio Day  which is Feb 13th 2021 by Sri Sri HH Padmanabha Varma of Travancore Royal Family. He was the inspiration for Kalburgi sir to open this museum. He has even donated one of his antique radios to this museum.

Era of music evolved from Radio to CD players. So some people have given their old CD players as well.

Finally as you exit the museum, you will find this huge Gramophone near the door. Sir was happy to play a Kannada song for us. The specialty of this was the volume control which was done by moving the flap up and down. Sounds Interesting. Isn't it? ๐Ÿ˜Š

So if you have an old vintage radio at home and you want the relive good old radio days, then please bring it to Mr Uday Kalburgi’s Short Wave Radio Museum. He will help you restore the same. In case you don’t have space to keep or maintain huge Vintage radios at home, you can even bring them to Kalburgi Sir and he would be more than happy to add one more antique piece to his collection๐Ÿ˜Š.
