Meghalaya - Part 6 - Shillong Local Sightseeing

Day 7 – [9-Sept-22] – Shillong Sight-seeing and overnight stay at Treebo (Shillong)

We woke up very relaxed today since the plan for the day was Shillong local sight-seeing. We had spoken to the friendly hotel staff, and they had arranged a taxi for us. While we waited for him, we thought of taking a walk around our Hotel Treebo.

We saw a temple and were happy seeing this in Meghalaya in so many days. So, without a second thought we headed straight to this temple first.

After offering our prayers, as we stepped out of the temple our driver had arrived and we hopped onto our vehicle for Shillong sightseeing.

Don Bosco Museum

This museum holds an exhaustive collection of the art, culture, cuisine, history and lifestyles of all the northeastern states. This is a well-planned museum comprising of 7 floors with a Sky walk on the roof top where you will get magnificent views of Shillong city.

As you enter the building, you will be first welcomed with the traditional outfits of each state from Northeast.

Only one person in a group is allowed to take pictures and there are volunteers who restrict monitor this in every building.

Our museum tour starts from 1st floor, and we need to start walking up each floor to explore the various themes of each state.

One floor had interesting exhibits related to fishing, agriculture, hunting etc.

Restrooms are made available in every floor, and it is very well maintained. It will easily take around 2.5-3 hours to cover all the floors and go through each exhibit in detail.

Once you reach the last floor on top, there is a children play area. And one movie hall where in the Northeastern anthem is screened. We were simply overwhelmed watching this video. It was a good summarization of whatever we saw in the last 3 hours in this museum.

In the same floor, there is a small café too where in you can have some snacks and tea/coffee.

Finally, there are directions to the Skywalk which is the last milestone of this tour.

We came down and there is a store at the reception. You can buy some interesting souvenirs here.

Ward’s lake

This lake is situated in the heart of Shillong city. It is surrounded by lush garden with colorful flora and fauna. You will find cobble stoned footpaths along the lake corners to walk a relaxed stroll here.

There is a wooden bridge in the middle of this lake. And it was clearly evident that boating is the primary activity here since we saw lot of colorful paddle boats lined up along the lakeside.

Also, there is a photograph place where in you get a chance to dress up in traditional Khasi attire and click photographs. Mostly people use the bridge as the photograph spot here.

After taking a stroll along the lake, we decided to take a boat. We passed by so many ducks during this drive.

Lady Hydari Park

This is also a park similar to Ward’s Lake, but it comprises of Zoo as well which we found really interesting. I was really amazed with the wide variety of Flora that were planted in this park.

Zoo comprises of various species of birds, reptiles, and mammals.

There is a children’s park with swings and other play themes for kids.

In the end there is a museum which houses pictures of rare animals and even their skin has been preserved here.

Cathedral Catholic church

Surprisingly this church was closed. So, we couldn’t understand more about this church since we didn’t find any boards there. We clicked pictures from outside and hopped onto our cars.

Police Bazaar

This is the prime shopping hub in Shillong city and is thronged by locals and tourists for its budget friendly shops hosting traditional handicrafts, clothes, and other stuffs. Worth taking a stroll along this market stretch. You will also find wide variety of restaurants also here. So, after a full day of sight-seeing, you can have a good dinner and head back to your place of stay.

There is a taxi place right at the junction of Police Bazaar from where you can take a running taxi to your hotel.

After spending a good day exploring Shillong city, we headed back to hotel since we had to pack and sleep early so that we could start to Guwahati next day early in the morning and visit some interesting places there as well😊.

So bye for now from Shillong city. Will share details and pictures of the places we explored in Guwahati in my next blog.
